Under less than ideal conditions, the Lady Pirates squared off against EIAC foe East Central on Monday evening in St. Leon. The Pirates got a much needed victory with a hard-fought 3-2 win.
The first point of the match went the way of the Pirates when Raegan Rigney, playing at #1 Singles, defeated Maddie Davidson 6-2, 6-2. The Lady Pirates got the next point as well when Kirsten Fong & Claudia Westhafer won over Maddie Richter & Jaylen Hilbert at #2 Doubles by a 6-2, 6-3 score. That left the Pirates needing only one more point to secure the victory.
That point would be provided by Ellie Acra at #3 Singles. Acra won the first set in rather easy fashion 6-2, but East Central’s Kelly Buescher took a big 4-1 lead in the second set before Acra got things back on track and completed the comeback winning the match for herself and her team 7-5.
At 1 Doubles, Elaine Welage & Julia Pacilio battled to win their first set over Lindsay Bischoff & Meredith Struewing 7-5. The East Central duo would then win the next two sets 6-4, 6-2 giving the Trojan’s their first point.
At second singles, Bailey Menkedick was in a battle royal against Carly Kane. After a long and very close first set went to Kane 7-5, the second set proved to be even closer. In the end, Kane was able to win the second set in a tie-breaker 7-6.
“The conditions tonight were probably as bad as any we have ever played in. The wind was realy gusting and swriling around making play very difficult at best. I thought our girls handled it very well”.
In JV action, Ellie Burkhart won her singles match 8-7 and Emma Hellmich & Sarah Schneider teamed up to win a doubles match 8-6.
