The Lady Pirates tennis team opened up EIAC tournement play on Thursday evening in Greensburg. The Pirates won 4 out of 5 of their first round match-ups.
At #1 Singles, Raegan Rigney defeated Barbara Hershberger of Rushville by a 6-0, 6-0 count. “Reagan had just play the Hershberger girl two days ago and it would have been easy for Reagan to have a let down, but she did not. She started strong and played well the entire match.”
At #2 Singles, Bailey Menkedick opened up play against Sydney Yoe of South Dearborn. Yoe had defeated Bailey in the season in straight-sets but this time the outcome would be quite different. Mendedick raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first set, weathered a rally by Yoe, and then closed out the first set 6-3. The second set would see Bailey play the best tennis she has played all year as she did not yield a single game winning 6-0.
At #3 Singles, Ellie Acra faced Tori Volk of Franklin County. Acra and Volk had played a very long 3 set match during the regular season but just like Menkedick, Acra would see that this match was quite different. Acra jumped up to an early lead and did not look back as she won 6-2, 6-3.
At #1 Doubles, Elaine Welage & Julia Pacilio opened up against Samantha Fisther & Skylar Lane of South Dearborn. Welage and Pacilio played a nearly flawless first set as they won 6-0. In the second set, South Dearborn turned up their play and Welage & Pacilio did not respond real well as the Knight duo evened up the match winning 6-2. A tie-breaker was palyed instead of a full third set and Fisher & Lane came out on top 10-5.
At #2 Doubles, Kirsten Fong & Claudia Westhafer began play against Maddy Richter & Jaylen Hilbert of East Central. Like most of the rest of the team, Fong/Westhafer came out of the gates strong and never looked back winning 6-3, 6-4.
Semi-Finals and Finals will be played Saturday morning beginning at 9 AM at the Greensburg Tennis Courts.
