The 37th Annual Girls Cross Country State Finals were held Saturday afternoon at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute. Greencastle’s Emma Wilson won the race in 17:46 while Zionsville won the team title with 118 pts.

Freshman Brenner Hanna represented Greensburg High School and placed 34th out of the 208 competitors running 18:48.6 for 5000 m. Brenner finished her first season of high school cross country winning 10 races including the EIAC Conference, IHSAA Sectional, and IHSAA Regional meets. She also tied the school record last week at the Shelbyville Semi-State race running a personal best time of 18:45.4.

Saturday morning the Lady Pirates Cross Country team competed in the IHSAA semi-state race at Shelbyville’s Blue River Memorial Park. Brebeuf Jesuit won the team competition with 70 pts and qualified for the state meet next week at Terre Haute. Other teams that qualified for state included Zionsville, Carmel, Hamilton Southeastern, Fishers, and Brownsburg. Greensburg placed 9th out of the 21 teams in the semi-state race. The Lady Pirates finished their season 96-19, which is the best record in school history.

Brenner Hanna qualified for the state meet individually and placed 23rd overall in the race. She used a strong finish over the last 1 km to finish in a time of 18:45.4. Brenner set a new personal best and equaled the school record with that performance. Brenner Hanna is the second Lady Pirate runner to ever qualify for the state meet in cross country. She will race next Saturday at 1:45 at the Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.

Mollie Pumphrey also ran her best time ever for 5 km. She finished in 20:05 and earned 77th overall in the race. Mollie finishes her freshman year with the 5th fastest time in school history. Cathy Newhart was 91st in 20:22. Cathy leaves the cross country program as the third fastest runner ever for 5km. She was all-country, all-conference, all-sectional, and all-regional in each of the years that she competed for Greensburg.

Liz Pavy and Cameron Jones finished in 108th and 109th, respectively. Liz set a new personal best of 20:39 with her time while Cameron broke 21:00 for the first time this season also running 20:39. Cameron concluded her cross country career ranked 7th all-time. Olivia Colson ran a personal best of 21:24 on Saturday to place 109th. Olivia’s time moves her to 12th all-time in school history. Hilary Ernstes placed 168th in a time of 23:16.

Game Recap

Madison defeated Greensburg in the sectional finals 25-23, 22-25, 26-24, 20-25, 10-15. Serving well was Ashlynn Meyer who was 23-23 scoring 14 points and Raegan Rigney who was 19-20 scoring 9 points. At the net, Anna West had 19 kills and Bailey Meyer had 17 kills. Ashley Bower and Kirstin Hersley played tough defense getting 21 and 15 digs respectively and Ashlynn Meyer put up 48 assists. We finished the season 25-9.

Shelbyville hosted the IHSAA Regional Cross Country meet Saturday morning at the Blue River Memorial Park. In the girls’ race, Center Grove scored 72 pts and won the team title. Greensburg had 78 pts and was the runner up. The second place finish at the regional is the highest in school history. The performance qualified the Lady Pirates for the semi-state meet next weekend at Shelbyville. Greensburg also improved their record to 84-11 for the year.

Freshman Brenner Hanna won the race in a time of 19:06. She is the first Lady Pirate to win the individual title at regional. Cathy Newhart was 3rd overall running 20:02. Cathy earned all-regional honors for the fourth consecutive year. Mollie Pumphrey placed 22nd in a time of 21:02. Cameron Jones ran 21:26 and was 30th in the race. Liz Pavy was 34th and had a time of 21:40. Olivia Colson crossed the finish line in 22:06 to earn 40th. Cheaney Jones was 77th in 24:39.

Meet Recap

Shelbyville hosted the IHSAA Regional Cross Country meet Saturday morning at the Blue River Memorial Park. Franklin Community boys won the team championship, and Southport’s Michael Crook was the individual winner in 16:20. The Pirates scored 267 points and came in 10th in the team standings.

Eric Million was Greensburg’s top finisher. He came in 55th overall in 18:32. Hunter Butz ran 18:33 and was next for the Pirates in 56th. Devin Imel finished his cross country career with a strong race. He placed 77th in 20:06 while Dylan Brown took 79th in 20:14. Bryan Bockover crossed the finish line in a time of 20:54 and placed 83rd. Dallas Crank was 86th in 21:43, and Jaxson Kramer ran 22:56 for 89th. The boys finished the season with a 48-54.

Greensburg defeated Rushville 25-9, 25-11, 25-19 to advance to the sectional final tonight at 7:00. Serving well for the Pirates was Raegan Rigney who was 21-21 scoring 17 points and Ashlynn Meyer 16-16 scoring 12 points. At the net, Bailey Meyer led the way with 11 kills. Ashlynn Meyer put up 27 assists and Ashley Bower defensively dug up 10 passes.
