South Dearborn hosted for the IHSAA Cross Country Sectional on Saturday morning. The Greensburg Pirates raced on the Moores Hill course for the third time this season with both teams qualifying for the regional meet next week. The boys finished second out of 12 schools in the team standings. Greensburg’s top five runners placed in the top 15 and earned all-sectional recognition.
Sophomore Andrew Johnson led the Pirates taking 9th place overall in a personal best time of 17:34. Jonathan Ralston was 10th in 17:42. Nate Murray ran 17:52 and placed 12th overall. Sawyer Sanders broke the 18:00 barrier for the second time this season. He finished 13th in 17:54. Senior Hunter Butz earned all-sectional recognition for the third year in a row. He placed 14th overall in a time of 17:56.
Freshman Vaughn Verzo ran a personal best on Saturday. He broke 20:00 for the first time in his career. He was 43rd in 19:32. Skylar Westerfeld also ran under 20 minutes for the first time ever. He placed 49th in a personal best of 19:52.
The teams travel to Franklin High School next week for the regional meet. The boys’ race starts at 10:30 am, and the girls’ competition will begin at 11:15.
